The movie theater “Africa”, a legendary cinematheque located in Sidi M’hamed (Algiers Center) with a capacity of 1,400 seats, reopened on Saturday after long years of closure, in the presence of local authorities and a plethora of artists.
The reopening of this hall, which witnessed the great years of Algerian cinema, coincided with the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the creation of the film association “Adhoua” (lights).
Speaking on this occasion, the Minister of Culture, Azzedine Mihoubi, recalled that the reopening of the cinema “Africa” was part of the project of revival of the operating network, saying, in this regard , that his department will continue its support for Algerian film production and will take care to encourage investment projects in this area (production boxes and studios).
He added that this room (cinema Afrique) “will benefit from the necessary support and training for the managers of theaters” to become a place of projection of Algerian films and not dedicated exclusively to festivals.
The minister also welcomed the efforts made by the association “Adhoua” for the promotion of Algerian cinema and its concern to pay tribute to artists.
The reopening of the “Africa” room was also the occasion for the inauguration of a commemorative plaque affixed to the facade of the structure, bearing the names of 172 deceased Algerian artists (comedians, directors and technicians) who made the glory of Algerian cinema.
Note that a tribute was paid to 160 artists (deceased and alive), like the actors Chafia Boudraa, Nouria, Taha Lamiri, Mustapha Berrour, Farida Saboundji and many directors and technicians.
The association is also proposing the organization, at the level of the Africa Room, of the weeks of the Algerian cinema, from next April, to attract the public, particularly the young people of the district.
